Visible from afar, the pointed tower of St John the Baptist rises above the rooftops of the village. First mentioned in documents in 1164, it is regarded as the oldest missionary and St John baptismal church in the entire area. Stepping through the portal, you are enveloped by a devout coolness and a fascinating mix of eras: the Romanesque original tower meets a light High Gothic choir, elaborate secco paintings from 1480 and the fine sound of a historic pipe organ.

  • Artworks & treasures: The precious baptismal font of pure white Lasa marble with a statue of John, the neo-Gothic high altar, venerable bishop figures and the expressive Crucifixion group.

  • The cemetery as a place of quiet: Around the church nestles the well-tended cemetery – wrought grave crosses, fragrant flowers and an unobstructed view down into the Merano basin make it one of the most moving viewpoints in the village.

  • Location & access: Central in the historic village core – the ideal starting point for walks to the Falkner promenade or down to Tirol Castle.
